Memes do not belong to any side, they do not vote, they do not participate. Memes do not care who their creator is. They run wild, hair and genitals flowing in the wind, and they seem to laugh in the face of death and cry, “We are alive!” If the memelords are like flowers, memes are the pollen. But perhaps more important than the flower(memelord) and the pollen(meme) itself is the bee. To act as a bee is to be an explorer of the tribe, out searching for the best pollen to consume and create liquid gold with (a micro-meme [1]), unknowingly fertilizing other flowers in the process. The flower should never get angry at the bee for “stealing pollen”, for in the end, it doesn’t even matter what flower the pollen came from, because the bees do their part in creating a new substance unrecognizable from the flower. And so, to steal a meme is to do a service to the meme itself, and in turn, it’s an act that goes in alignment with the whole universe.
Memes are an art form that build on previously established levels of cultural complexity, and as a chain effect, create a new type of language that serves the purpose of discrediting and destroying the current cultural illusion by turning it into a joke. This collective meme-mind of symbols is updated so quickly, that it goes undetected by the corporate algorithms used to decode our online identities for the sake of capitalist propaganda. If it does, however, become flagged as “offensive content” by those who attempt to control us, the memers are quick to update this collective language and discredit any attempts of censoring free minds. In many recent encounters with Orwellian cyber-censoring, let’s take as an example the infamous FLAMING GOOSE MEME that was censored on facebook pretty stupidly.
The censorship itself caused an uproar amongst the memers, and ended up bringing attention to the defacement of Mark Zuckerberg, leading to the creation of “zucc’d”, and thus participating in a chain of meme sequences that made people more woke to the truth. The key element is not the flaming goose, but rather, the fact that it got censored. The memers continued to spread the goose meme, playing with context and symbolic variations, as a way to simultaneously test and troll Facebook’s AI to see just how deep Zucc’s penetration really goes.
There is no question that in meme-language “zucc” is more powerful and exciting a symbol than the original photograph of the flaming goose. Zucc gains it’s power from it’s antecedent succ, and to build on previously established memes is to take the collective mind a step further down the rabbit hole. Dank memes will always win the intellectual arousal of the species, by directly bypassing any attempts of controlling our language.
Why is intellectual arousal important? In the physical realm, genes are spread through the reproductive cycle initiating with two gene holders’ sexual arousal. This process is the basis of biology and evolution. A species cannot evolve unless it reproduces. When language was created in the human species, a psychic micro-universe was born, and it is constantly evolving and upgrading as it builds on previously established layers of meaning. The spread of ideas is no different than the spread of genes, for ideas need to captivate the mind in order to be absorbed and reproduced. The difference is that where as genes reproduce outward in the physical realm, memes or ideas reproduce and enrich the inner dimension of our collective consciousness, aided by computers. The most powerful way to create intellectual arousal is through laughter, for the mind surrenders it’s belief system and opens itself up for acceptance of a new idea. The mind then becomes intellectually fertilized, capable of making connections with it’s old archive of knowledge, and reproducing meme offspring.
It is interesting to note that memes are alive in the conscious mind for only a short period of time. After the fires have died down, the meme loses freshness and quality, and is quickly forgotten. But there is no doubting the strange aftertaste a dank meme leaves on the mind, corrupting old values, serving as a stepping stone to a new way of thinking. Although the meme is forgotten, the memer never ceases to be a changed individual. As opposed to the current superficial definition of “artist”, the memers make the most of what little they may have by realizing the strange anonymous power they have over the internet. It is a power that shatters 50 years of false prophets and flashy commercials by literally taking a shit on the faces of our corporate gods. While the “artists” and “important figures” of our society work hard at building a convincing image, the memers come along and destroy that image, fully aware of the true meaninglessness of our existence.
The memers’ role in our crumbling society is to deconstruct it, and send the pieces flying out into cyber-space where we are still free. We have the power to look behind the veil of cultural illusion and to show each other that we were raised on lies. In the end, this world is composed of ideas and symbols, and those who manipulate these symbols hold the power. Memes are a great equalizer- they can come from anywhere, in any shape or form, and their power lies in the human spirit’s increasingly obsessive need to share funny shit.
